St. Martin’s Thrift Store is an ecumenical ministry started several decades ago by the Daughter’s of Isabella at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church.
Several years ago the thrift store moved to its present location, the lower level of the Parish Center at 112 Maine Avenue, Millinocket, ME. This move provided the store with vastly increased floor space, allowed the store to display more of its clothing and other merchandise to a better advantage and made it easier for customers to shop. The move allowed for a more welcoming atmosphere, including development of the friendly “coffee nook” suggested by caring customers.
For more than 25 years, the thrift store has been aiding the disadvantaged of the area, as well as cost-conscious people of all economic strata, by offering the sale of gently used clothing and merchandise at reasonable prices.
In addition all proceeds, after expenses, are used to help support the ecumenical food pantry and ecumenical emergency fuel fund whose funds are dispensed to eligible persons in the tri-town area.
Patrons of the store come from a divergent geographical area that includes: Houlton, Island Falls, Patten, Sherman, Orono, Enfield, Lincoln, Howland, Dover-Foxcroft and out-of-state visitors who summer in the Katahdin Region.
As the economy has declined, the money generated by St. Martin’s Thrift Store has increased as those in the Katahdin Region have tried to stretch their budgets.
At least one thrift store-related internet sites has given St. Martin’s Thrift Store high marks for its: pricing, selection, organization, cleanliness, friendly staff and community service. Repeat customers are the norm, not the exception, at St. Martin of Tours Thrift Store.
The stigma of thrift store shopping is gone and thrift stores have shown steady growth over the past decade. Come in and see first-hand our quality clothing and merchandise found with St. Martin’s Thrift Store!
